National Lasagna Day is celebrated each year on the 29th July by eating a plateful of this cheesy, rich tomato sauce based pasta dish.

It is thought to have originated in Roman times from the Latin word ‘lasanum’ meaning pot or container, referring to the dish lasagna is cooked. Though only appearing in Italian recipe books in the 1300s, with all the classic ingredients appearing in Naples in the 19th century. Depending on the region in Italy, the pasta sheet are either flat (North) or rippled (South).
